In Spring of 2026, I had the opportunity to travel to Helsinki, Finland, as part of a South Carolina trade mission alongside representatives from private industry, Clemson University’s Wood Utilization + Design Institute, and the South Carolina Forestry Commission. The trip centered around the Pulp & Beyond Conference, one of the world’s premier events focused on forest products, biomaterials, and sustainable manufacturing.

The future of forestry

Finland is widely recognized as a global leader in sustainable forestry and wood utilization, and the experience provided valuable insight into where the forest industry is headed. Throughout the conference, companies and researchers highlighted innovations in renewable fuels, advanced packaging, engineered wood products, biomaterials, carbon utilization, and next-generation pulp applications.

One of the most notable takeaways was the strong alignment between government, research institutions, private industry, and landowners. Forestry is viewed not only as an economic driver but also as a critical component of long-term environmental stewardship and national infrastructure.

The trip reinforced a belief we hold at Milliken Advisors: the southeastern United States, and South Carolina in particular, are well-positioned to play a significant role in the future global forest economy. With abundant timber resources, strong private land ownership, established infrastructure, and generations of forestry expertise, our region has tremendous opportunity.

At the same time, maintaining leadership in the forest sector will require continued innovation, investment, workforce development, and collaboration. As forestry evolves, the challenges and opportunities ahead are increasingly global in nature. The experience in Finland served as a reminder that the future of forestry belongs to those willing to innovate, adapt, and think long-term.
