Matthew Smith, ACF, CF, serves as a Forester and Forest Carbon Specialist at Milliken Advisors, bringing 38 years of intensive experience in natural resource management. A graduate of the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF) with a BS in Forest Resource Management, Matt has dedicated his career to advancing sustainable forestry and natural capital markets. He is a Certified Forester (#1579), an active member of both the Society of American Foresters (SAF) and the Association of Consulting Foresters (ACF), and served as an Adjunct Professor at SUNY ESF for 17 years.

Before joining Milliken Advisors in 2026, Matt spent 16 years as the Vice President of Forest Operations at Finite Carbon. In this role, he was a driving force behind the development of nearly 70 projects, managed over 150 carbon verifications, and helped landowners realize more than one billion dollars in carbon revenue. His foundational career includes senior leadership at FORECON Inc., where he rose to Director of Land Management—overseeing operations for 450,000 acres—and later launched its subsidiary, FORECON EcoMarket Solutions LLC.

Globally recognized as an authority on forest carbon policy, calculations, and ecosystem service markets, Matt has lent his expertise as an ISO 14001 auditor and a member of the Chicago Climate Exchange Forestry Committee. Today, he advises government agencies, investment groups, private landowners, and NGOs across North America on carbon offsets, natural capital assessments, and feasibility studies.
